Farewell, Rosie the Riveter!

The woman known to several generations as the "We Can Do It" girl and an icon of the feminist movement has died. Geraldine Doyle was a 17-year old factory worker in World War Two when her photo was turned into a poster by Westinghouse Corporation as part of the U.S. government effort to boost morale, recruit workers, and help people get used to the idea of women working on assembly lines making tanks, fighter planes, and battleships. The iconic poster, painted by J. Harris Miller, was rarely seen in the 1940s but was rediscovered in the 1970s and has since become one of the most popular of all time.

Goodbye, Rosie, and thanks for the inspiration!

Meow Open During Construction!

Free Parking Downtown!

We are open during construction!

Don't despair! Even though it may be a little bit tough to get to us, it is worth the effort!

What's going on: Currently, the city is replacing all of the sewer systems underneath Carden Street, right in front of City Hall --which just happens to be right in front of Meow as well! Because of the construction, all of the street is closed to vehicle traffic and there is no parking on Carden in front of the store.

BUT! There is still FREE 2-HOUR PARKING on Wilson St just around the corner from Meow, only steps away. As well, there is also FREE 2-HOUR PARKING in the Wilson Street Parking Lot, kitty-corner to Meow right beside Macondo Books. And if you want to stay longer to grab a bite at Atmosphere Cafe, Bin 23, the Albion, the Vienna, WOW, Cornerstone, or Carden Street Cafe, there is an hourly rate available after 2hours in the lot. And remember, parking is free downtown all night after 6pm.

And don't forget the bus stop, right at the corner of Wilson and Carden beside City Hall, just across the street.

Meow! Guelph: New dresses, bags, and seasonal accessories arriving daily!

Thursday: Dancetheatre David Earle & The Pendrecki String Quartet at the Riverrun Centre, Downtown Guelph!

April 8, 2010 | time: 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm

River Run Centre
35 woolwich street, guelph n1h 3v1
519.837-5662 · riverrun.ca
tickets $5-$30 (lots of student discounts!)
As part of the uGo program, university and college
students may purchase tickets for only $20 each. And through
eyeGO, high school students may attend for just $5 each. All
tickets may be purchased online at www.riverrun.ca, by phone at
519-763-3000 or in person at the Box Office from 11 a.m. to 6
p.m., Monday through Saturday.

The River Run Centre presents a program
of works by Dancetheatre David Earle (DtDE) on Thursday, April 8th,
2010 at 8:00 pm. The featured work is Odyssey - a collaborative
piece for string quartet, live electronics and dance - choreographed by
David Earle to a new score by Canadian composer Omar Daniel, and
performed by Omar himself, and the Penderecki String Quartet.
An epic tale of separation and reunion, Odyssey was commissioned by
The Banff Centre for the Arts, where it received its World Premiere just
last year. The April 8th program also includes Serious Games (1998),
which was originally commissioned by Canadian Children’s Dance
Theatre, and DtDE’s signature piece, Miserere, set to music by Grigorio
Allegri.
David Earle is one of Canada’s most prolific and celebrated
choreographers. He has also been an inspirational figure in Canadian
and international dance as a teacher and mentor to successive
generations of young dance artists. A lengthy list of accomplishments
and accolades illuminates a stellar artistic career. He has trained at
the Martha Graham School in New York, performed around the world,
cofounded Toronto Dance Theatre, choreographed over 140 original
works and received the Order of Canada – to name a few. David is
best known for merging rich imagery and evocative music to create
powerfully moving dance.
In 1996 he established Dancetheatre David Earle to support continuing
creation and preservation of his repertoire, and to serve as a forum for
younger artists whose concern is the expression of humanity in dance.
He is particularly interested in creating opportunities for dance
audiences to hear new contemporary and traditional music, and he
regularly choreographs to live accompaniment, including choirs, small
ensembles, and orchestras – including the Penderecki String Quartet.
“We've worked with the Penderecki for the past 12 years,”’ says Earle.
“There is nothing to equal the experience of dancing to live music — to
sounds that are born in that moment. Each performance has its own
life, its own electricity.”

Meow and Classic LPs in the Guelph Mercury

We were interviewed in the local paper yesterday about vintage vinyl!

Spin cycle goes full circle: Vinyl records are cool again

March 10, 2010
Troy Bridgeman

GUELPH — Sales of compact discs have been dropping since the introduction of downloading, MP3s and iPods but the popularity of vinyl is enjoying a growing resurgence.

U.S. record companies saw the sale of vinyl records nearly double from 2007 to 2008 and the spin cycle appears to be repeating itself exponentially as many old and new artists are choosing to release a growing percentage of their work on the old format.

Bryan and Kara Munn own Meow and Chat Noir. Those are vintage clothing and furniture stores in downtown Guelph. They say used vinyl records are a growing part of their business.

The 9th Annual En Couture Fashion Show

Guelph Fashion Show!

Meow! is proud to be participating in an exciting charity event, the annual En Couture Fashion Show. This year's show takes place at the Old Quebec Street Mall, Downtown Guelph, on Saturday March 6. The multi-media show will spotlight local boutiques and designs and features musical set pieces with tons of glamour and the volunteer efforts of many University of Guelph students. Please think about attending this fabulous fun event. Advance tickets are just $10 and all proceeds go to a worthy charity.

The theme this year, just in time for the Oscars, is "Old Hollywood" --a subject close to Meow's heart. We were happy to provide outfits for the photo shoot for the posters for this event as well as for the fashion show itself.

Check out the facebook group "CMESA En Couture Fashion Show 09/10"

The College of Management and Economics Students Association is proud to present the 9th Annual
En Couture Fashion Show March 2010.

This year's show promises to be an exciting and eventful occasion featuring the latest fashions from local boutiques and shops.

The show is geared towards promoting the locality of Guelph and it's surroundings all while raising proceeds for a wonderful local charity.

The charity En Couture has chosen to raise money for this year is the Guelph Wish Fund for Children. Founded in 1984, the Guelph Wish Fund for Kids is an entirely volunteer organization. They give over 95% of all funds raised towards granting wishes of local children who are 19 years of age or younger who life with a serious or life-threatening illness, a severe handicap, or who have been critically injured. The hope is that the wish that is granted will help the child, even if only for a short period of time, feel relieved of the pain and anxiety dealt with in their every day life. August 2009 was the Wish Fund's 25th anniversary and En Couture's goal this year is to raise as much money as possible to help make their 25th year a year they'll never forget!

To help us do this, we are teaming up with a business called Rock Your Cause™! Rock Your Cause™ is a marriage of couture and cause, designed to compel people to, well rock their causes! Through the sale of their Orange Logo™ apparel they raise funds and awareness for various philanthropic organizations. Through their Colour Your Cause™ campaign they work with students of all ages, as well as companies, and even individuals hold fundraising events and run cause campaigns of their own. Rock Your Cause™ is "philanthropy that fits perfectly!" and they are looking forward to being a part of this years University of Guelph CMESA En Couture Fashion show. For more information visit their website www.rockyourcause.ca, their Facebook group, and fan page.
